Dusktown. Of all the places to dock at port to get fresh supplies and sell goods, it had to be effing Dusktown Shard had been oddly quiet as the Captain informed the crew where they'd be docking and to get ready anything they needed to bater or sell. She'd been quiet as everyone got busy, slow in her work and not wanting to leave her galley, no witty comments or snide remarks airing from her dark lips. Of all the homes she'd had, Dusktown was the one that was least-likely to welcome her and most likely to have someone she'd pissed off in years past find her. Ancestors knew there were more than a handful of men with scars left from her biting them, and one pissed off lord who'd needed things reattached, if not a prostetic of some kind after his special night trying to "break her". Even beyond the short stint at the brothel, there were dozens and dozens in the town she'd robbed personally and helped large groups to rob crowds. The odds were staggering that someone would know her face; dark skin, dark hair and a foul mouth were hard to misplace.

The Emerald was docked and the crew had gone to buy and sell, Eshara barking off a verbal list of what she needed but refusing to leave the safety of her kitchen, leaving her oddly alone on the ship save for one of the cabin boys doing chores. She knew it was alright there and that her crew wouldn't leave her alone for long; someone would finish sooner than others and return, and she'd have some company. Until then? Might as well use the last of the supplies and get started on a decent dinner. They'd bring her back all that she needed, most liekly, so using a little extra tonight to make sure everyone got good portions of everything wouldn't hurt.

Things bubbled and steamed as Eshara set to one of the few things in this life she knew she was decent at, running a knife smoothly through the soft flesh of the chickens and splitting their bodies before tossing them in a large iron pot to stew down. She'd cook down the meat with potatoes and root vegetables and herbs and make a nice side dish with apples, onions and currants. Make a nice fricasee for dinner for all and even make it a little nicer than usual. Being alone for a few hours didn't bother her at all. Not in the slightest. She just needed cooking to do. Lots of it. keep her hands busy, keep from fidgeting. Without even thiking of it or meaning to, Eshara begain singing lightly as she split more meat, her voice low and humming, soothing her psyche as she kept herself busy, hoping someone would come home soon.

Post  Bones Mon Mar 12, 2012 2:11 pm

In a small, quiet alley in Dusktown there was a once empty barrel.

This barrel was not particularly exciting; it was empty when the current user had found it, but Bones needed somewhere quiet and calm to sleep last night, where she'd be far away from the intimidating noise of crowds, and safe from the night's cold. The lid came off as she smashed her hand through the wood with a great deal of strength and power, and the barrel fell onto its side, with the dark skinned woman crawling out. She had her makeshift helmet still on her head, and her hand stroked the floor for her halberd Wolf's Bane, which she clasped. Her eyes spun to the emptier side of the street, the one that led to the main port. Once again it was quiet; Bones had heard the rumbling in her sleep of people moving by in the early morning into town, but Bones had missed the crowds. Good thing too. She thought.

Then she stopped thinking as a strong smell surrounded her.

Her nostrils flared, taking in as much of the smell as she could. She smell meat; specifically chicken. Bones peered to where the smell was coming from. It was obviously coming from some large wooden structure. She had seen one in the air on her journey here. What was it? And it smelt of chicken? What was inside?

A loud rumbling sound. Bones looked to her own belly, which let out an animalistic growl. Hunger was at the pit of her stomach and she wanted to eat. Bones crawled right to the edge of the street. The structure was merely on the other side, and only two windows were there. Her nose directed her to the window straight ahead of her... or rather, straight ahead of her and forty feet in the air. Bones smirked under the helm. She could get up to there; that chicken was going to be hers in no time. She stood to full height, unusual for her, and began to run towards the ship, looking down. She inhaled, readying herself to perform a spell; Shocking Howl.

"HYAAAAH!"

It was loud and spent a ripple of dust to flow across the ground like a tidal wave, Bones rushing into the air as she jumped to the window. She was in air for a bit more than a second, then she smashed the point of Wolf's Bane into the wood, stopping her fall. It remained in place, leaving her hanging right next to the window. However, she waited for about half a minute to catch her breath, before she gently placed her foot into the tiny hole, then the next foot. She swung her body around, rolling silently into the structure, revealing a darkened kitchen to her. A cavelcade of smells ran into her nostrils, before Bones heard someone speaking. Someone was already in here. Bones had to be sneaky. But then Bones noticed something strange about the speech; it was to a rhythm. It was like music. Some tribes Bones had encountered in the desert and savannahs of Thibudis had music, sounds creating for fun. It was an alien but somewhat pleasing notion to Bones, but it did not put aside the need for stealth.

The helmet wearing woman focused all of her willpower into completely silencing her breath. Her bare hands and feet left no sound on the wood as she crawled along the floor, so it was her breathing that needed to be toned down. Her magic dropped the volume of her breathing so was not making a single sound. Her pace was steady, not drawing any attention from the room's occupant. Bones kept searching for the source of the smell, but her curiosity forced her to start inspecting some of the other things in the room, looking for food. Metal cylinders, bowls of wood and iron, sharp things, blunt things, seeds and cut up leaves, all a manner of things. Bones soon stopped at a rack of pans above a large metal box; it was an oven, but she was not to know. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she glanced behind her, making sure the person she was intruding on didn't see her, then looked back to the pans. Her hand slowly grabbed one, and she inspected it. She couldn't decipher what it was for, but she got another one, and noted that all the pans were different sizes. Clearly, it was used on something complex enough to require multiple tools.

That's when something was nudged.

Enamoured by the pans, Bones failed to note where she had precariously laid her halberd, leaning against a set of shelves, all of them stacked with pots and pans of clay and metal and wood and all a manner of materials. It had begun to fall, but now it's gradual tumble became a genuine fall, it brought the entire set with it, including everything on it.

CLATTER CLANG WHAM CLANG SMASH CLATTER CLANG!

Bones immediately went into panic mode. Noise! Loud noise! "AAARRRGGGHHH!" She couldn't stop herself from screaming, her arm immediately pulling Wolf's Bane from the pile as she rushed into a corner. She sank to the floor, back to the wall and her head hidden by her left arm, her right shakily pointing her halberd out and her legs curled towards her, fear consuming and choking her. She shivered nervously, whimpering quite pathetically and waiting for the noise to stop ringing in her ears.

"I will build my love a bower,
By a cool crystal fountain
And around it I will pile
All the wild flowers from the mountain
Will ye go lassie go~?"

She might not have won any trbadour awards, but the slow rhythm and soothing tune were at least enough for right now to keep her own nerves calm and happy while she worked. Even though the pace of the song was slow, it helped Eshara from rushing through her work, feeling as the knife slid along the backbones of each chicken as she quartered them. She'd boil them all up and pick out the bones for soup later, but thankfully for right now she had plenty of time to just cook and simmer things and fill the gallet with the smell of meat starting to stew and large bundles of herbs.

"And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin' heather
Will ye go lassie go?"

Eshara paused in her work, hearing something like a very loud bark outside, but as she paused to listen there was nothing. Probably just some mongrel out there got under a horse's foot. Another thought wasn't given to it, the cook going back to happily engrossing herself in the slow, repetitive motions of cutting and slicing various componants in her happy place. Shard paused for a few moments only, rinsing off her knife and glancing out one of the portholes at the world outside. It really was funny to be in Dusktown again, though it shouldn't ahve surprised her; of the cities filled with various kinds of lowlife that a pirate ship could dock and restock in (relative) safety, this was pretty high up on the (shit)list. And as long as everyone out there stayed out where tehy were meant and not bothering her, that was just fine.

She continued on, cooking and singing the shanty steadily as the galley's air became thick with the smell of stewing meat and herbs. She didn't hear the wild woman sneaking around her kitchen; how could she? Between Bones' magic and Shard trying to block out as much of the world as she could, rather confident that nobody would be up to bother her. The process of blocking out the world only served to work against Eshara as when the pots, pans and jugs came crashing down in a loud, shattering mess and caused her ti give a startled yelp and a jump. Immediately her hand went for her long pin, the cook spinning on her heels, ready to beat some little cabin boy.

"I swear to the Ancestors, Ricket! HOW many times 'ave I told you to stay out of my kitchen while I'm cooking!" Eshara moved around the ship's kitchen, meter-long rolling pin in hand as she looked around and poked for the annoying little cabin boy that was constantly in trouble with her, usually for trying to sneak sweets or pick off the Captain's plate. "I swear boy, if you've broken all my plates, so help me Spirits, you are in for a world of-" She whipped around, finding the form cowering in the corner with a halberd aimed outward halfhazardly. "-...hurt?"

The woman in the corner was practically naked and wearing a large skull over her head, markings and accessories all over her body, the sharpened end of the halberd held outward but not really aimed well enough to be a problem. Definintely not the little cabin boy. Eshara couldn't help but stare, confused as to whom this stranger was, why in the Nine Hells she was on the Emerald and more importantly, in Shard's kitchen, and where had she come from. Her skin was the same as Shard's own, and that in and of itself was a rarity. She kept a short distance, watching the stranger carefully. "Somethin I can help you with?"

Post  Bones Wed Mar 14, 2012 12:13 pm

Noise had become everything to percieve. Bones kept her head down, panicked and shaking. The occupant's roar rang through the poky kitchen and made the panic worse and worse. Some bizarre shouting, before finally it stopped. Bones' head rose slightly, looking up to the woman who confronted her. Similar skin colour to Bones herself, but everything else was completely different. Her clothes were more layered, her body free of marks, her face and hair left free without obstruction or oppression. As the woman's eyes fell on Bones, they softened slightly and she stopped making noise.

The tip of the halberd immediately pointed to the woman, the grip now more firm in Bones' hand as she remained crouched. Her green eyes pierced the brown of the woman. She had her own weapon, after all, so anything could happen. The wild woman remained low, though she slid her feet under her so she was squatting, ready to strike should the awkward peace break.

"Somethin' I can help you with?" Came her voice. Bones didn't react to this; she remained stony still for a few seconds, but now her mind began to turn to what she had said rather than what threat she potentially posed. What did those words mean? The speed at which she spoke confused Bones' already shaky grasp on the language. However, she slowly pieced it together word by word, if taking a while to do it. Finally, the spearhead lowered, and Bones decided to answer the question honestly. After all, who was to say there wasn't enough food to share.

"... a..." Bones had to stop there. Her eyes closed in deep thought, thinking of how to form the very simple words; her speech was slow, extremely clumsy and even nervous, as she was aware of how poor she was at speaking, never mind the social aspect of it. "... I... w-w-w... would like..." She had to stop once again, now growing frustrated. Under her breath, she let out a growl that was extremely animal-like and threatening, and she had even made it louder simply to calm herself; the wolves would growl to hide their nervousness, amongst other purposes, and Bones had picked up that habit, so the whole cabin rumbled with her bubbling rage at her own inability. She calmed down a little, and tried again. "... like s-some ffffff... ffffffff... some... fffffff... f-food," she stuttered out finally before looking up to the woman she confronted for recognition, like a child expecting feedback from a tutor.

In a land where anything was possible (even if not always probable), and on a ship of sky pirates whose captain was secretly nothing like the image the public held of him, findind a woman who was practically naked, covered in tattoos, wearing a skull on her head and pointing a halberd at you really didn't come across as the most unusual or unlikely thing to happen to you. Just maybe for that day. Eshara watched the wild woman warily, planning to keep her movements slow and careful lest she become Shard-kebab; that probably wouldn't make her cap'n too happy. Who'd feed him and tend to him like she did? Slowly the weapon lowered, and the end of Shard's rolling pin was placed on the floor like a walking stick.

"... a... ...I... w-w-w... would like..." Oh, she could speak. Well, that was certainly helpful. Shard hated charades, and she didn't care much for being growled at. bad enough she got that from half the crew when they hadn't had their coffee or breakfast yet. "... like s-some ffffff... ffffffff... some... fffffff... f-food." A black eyebrow raised, Eshara sighing inwardly. A half-naked wild woman in Dusktown armed with a pointy stick had broken into the Emerald to beg for food. Riiiiiight. At least it was more intersting than how the cabin boys tried to snitch food when she wasn't looking, and their attempts to scare her with rats stopped when it got served to them for lunch.

Her hand moved to perch on her hip, looking Bones over as best she could, frowning slightly. Cap'n wasn't going to be happy at some of their supplies getting used unaccounted for... she'd have to think of soemthing to cover her tracks with. "Does it look like I run a sodding restaurant?" She glanced at Bones again, looking somewhere between annoyed and sympathetic as she turned away from her, walking slowly back toward her larder. "Come on, then..." The rest of the crew would be out, and they were supposed to be filling Eshara's massive shopping list for the ship; she had time enough on her hands and could spare a little. And besides, having some company would be a nice distraction, and she was rather curious about the marks on her. Was she a traded slave, too?

The massive rolling pin was leaned against a baker's rack as Eshara reached up, rummaging through the things in tins and packages she could spare. Leftover roast was pulled from a cooler, a few thick slices carved off of it and put onto a plate with other good leftovers piling up. A little bit from everything all around wouldn't be noticed the way a large amount of just one thing would be, and the plate was placed in a small chamber of the massive iron stove to heat up. Her tone gentled entirely as she looked back at Bones, waiting to see if she'd come closer or not. [color=#cc99cc]"So... What's your name? I'll have some food for you in just a few minutes.."[/color

Bones wasn't really able to discern Shard's irritation from her tone, as it was a mixture of that and sympathy. The savage could do little more than watch and hope that Shard would agree to her terms. The cook certainly did seem annoyed, but she didn't look ready to attack, and she finally turned around. "Does it look like I run a sodding restaurant? Come on, then..." As Shard walked, Bones began to follow, remaining low to the ground at first. However, as Shard stopped at the stove, the wild woman clambered on top of the nearest table, peering curiously at everything the cook did. As Eshara checked every tin, every package, every piece of leftover food she had, Bones would immediately after inspect it herself. She lightly poked the packages with the end of Wolf's Bane, but despite her hunger it was the tins that made her most curious; she read the labels and saw the pictures on the front, deducing that these were containers of some sort. She spun one, a tin of fruit, in her hand, looking for a way in. She saw the lid and toyed with it, before she heard Shard's question.

"N-n-name." She stuttered, placing the word once more. This was the question she was most used to answering, so it was a lot easier than other questions. "Bones." She said, a wide grin under her helmet, feeling proud for saying it with what she assumed was clarity; her speech was still slow, but it was at least something she could say well with consistency. Her gaze focused to Shard, one of her hands extending to Shard's shoulder, before she lightly poked it. "Name?" She asked, hoping that it got the message across.

CLACK

Her head whipped to the tin, that she had just managed to yank open. She placed it down, a small piece of fruit spilling out onto the table as she peered at it. So I was right she thought, feeling proud of her discovery.

Dinner For Two Empty Re: Dinner For Two

Post  Eshara Sun Apr 01, 2012 6:50 pm

Well, wasn't this a funny way to spend the afternoon. On the Emerald alone to cook and suddenly having company that barely seemed to understand much of what Shard was saying or the world around her. More interesting than the boys coming in and bugging me at least. Eshara fussed around the stove, waiting for the plate of food to heat up for Bones, stopping to remove the lid from a large bubbling pot to stir her boiling chickens. Poultry, herbs, and onions all boiling together into a state of happiness, assuring the cook that it would be a dinner that would make the crew very happy tonight.

Eshara couldn't help but keep glancing over he shoulder at Bones, watching her as she climbed onto a table and messed with... well, everything. A tine of preserved sugared fruits seemed to be holding her attention for the moment, and it was almost kind of amusing, as though she'd never seen the object before. Slowly Shard wiped off the large knife she'd been cutting leftovers with and opened another tin, pulling out a loaf of wrapped bread. It was starting to go stale and needed eating anyway, and so becming toast would suit just fine. "N-n-name. Bones."

So, Bones, was it? At least the name was easy to say and remember, and hopefully that was her name. She'd said Bones with enough confidence to lead Eshara to believe that was right, at least. Eshara put the two slices of bread on the iron of the stove to toast, flinching noticeably as Bones poked her shoulder. It wasn't so bad since it was only a poke and Bones was another woman, but touch was still something Shard had become very selective about. The crew knew to approach her slowly and generally not to touch unless she said it was okay; Eshara might occasionally hug or pat the cabin boys and the other women on the ship, but for the most part? Only one person's touch did not make her twitch instinctively. "Name?"

Broken conversation was better than none at all, Eshara supposed. She paused a moment as she thought of how to answer, flipping her toast. Eh-shah-rah might be a little hard to say. She couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle as Bones finally pried the tin open, a fat, slightly wrinkled sugared peach rolling out to her. "Go on, you can have it," she said encouragingly, looking at Bones as she spoke. "Shard. My name is Shard." She spoke plainly and slowly, putting a little more emphasis on her nickname than the rest of the words, apart from the word 'name'. She was curious to ask where Bones had come from and about the marks all over her. She couldn't have been property, too; she seemed like she'd never really interacted with other humans. She watched for another moment before turning away from Bones again, taking the toast off the stoveplate and opening the chamber back up, grabbing the plate of food out with her apron.

"There now... This should keep you full, for at lwast a bit, anyway." Yeah, Bones may not have nderstood most or any of that. Whatever. The company was nice at least. Slowly, Shard set the pate down onto the table next to Bones with a fork, though she wasn't really expecting stellar manners. One slice of the toasted bread was put on the table as well, Eshara keeping the other to munch on herself, and show that the food wasn't dangerous. "It's hot."

Bones didn't really notice the twitch that Eshara gave at a touch, now her attention was fixed onto the peach that had rolled onto the table. It was fruit, Bones knew that much, but she didn't quite know whether she should eat it or not. However, the cook said as such, so Bones picked it up, turning it in her hand, inspecting it.

"Shard. My name is Shard." Bones turned around when Shard spoke, noticing that the cook was now looking at her, and it made Bones somewhat self conscious, putting down the peach and waiting patiently for whatever food was being made to be ready. Sure enough, a piece of toast was placed on the table in front of Bones. "There now... This should keep you full, for at least a bit, anyway. It's hot." Shard said, simple and slow enough for Bones to process.

Bones immediately grabbed the toast slice and the peach, before turning her back on Eshara; no one, but no one saw what was under the helmet. Bones' original fight with the alpha wolf of her pack when she was only ten had taught her just how safe it was under the helm she called 'Bite-Breaker', so to show it to anyone felt inherently dangerous to her. But she had to lift it so she could eat, so she opted to turn her back on Shard, flipping the skull up by the left horn and exposing her extremely scarred face to the air. As for her eating habits, to say 'wolf it down' would be very apt considering both her heritage and the speed in which she devoured the toast and the peach, taking almost the entire slice in one massive chomp. She had finished her meal before Shard's own piece of toast had so much as touched her lips. Bones clamped the helmet back down, hiding her face as she looked back to Shard. She had to make sure she could say the name right anyway.

"Shhhhhhhh..." She tried, then stopped to start again. Luckily it was only a one syllable word, so she knew she'd get it. Shhh-arrrrrrrr... duh... shhhhhhhhhhhhhhharrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd... The process was slow, but with every utterence of the name she got closer and closer to being right.
